Lessons in Gratitude Day 10

Today I remembered the incredible energy that comes from being in conversation–in communion–with a group of good people. I spent 90 minutes this morning on a conference call with members from a leadership group I participated with in 2007. The fact that this group of people from all over the country and several countries outside the US still comes together to connect is wonderful in and of itself. But it’s what happens during the call that’s so cool.

There’s a certain synergy that is created when a group of people who share a particular connection spend time together. People who’ve shared a particular experience together as a group, a cohort, a class, a family, etc. build a web of connection that can be pretty powerful. What I remembered from that call is how important it is to be in ongoing contact with people who are important to you. What I discovered about myself today is that I am much better–I think more deeply, I am more present, I am more creative, I am more–when I am with people than I am when I’m alone. That’s quite a revelation from someone who’s fairly introverted and has spent some time alone in my life. It’s not about being uncomfortable being alone, it is more about the recognition of the positive energy that gets created when two or more people come together with purpose on purpose.

Today’s experience is further confirmation to me that I am definitely on the right track in terms of reaching out to people around me. It’s not about reaching out from a place of being lonely or in need, it’s very much about connecting and building from the energy, the magic that happens when creative or talented or loving people get together. Even over the phone such energy is tangible, it’s palpable, it’s real. That strength and power is available to us all the time if we reach out for it, or if we attract it to us. That’s what I’m looking for. That’s what I want to continue to draw into my life. That’s what I’m talking about!
